History[/u]
Originally the land that currently contains Vaikne was part of the vast Jarnvid that once claimed all land south of the Winter Tears as far east as the present-day capital city of Speranta. The forest was wild and savage with no sentient life mastering it, it is thought this was the height of the drakes' rule as what Titans and their spawn fled or died. Eventually even the drakes fell from their lofty position of power over the reaches of the Jarnvid as Humanoids began to show up and take root. As time passed by the forest was slowly cut back by the advances of sentient life, tiny settlements rose and fall over these early years, though their names and inhabitants are lost to time. Eventually a small settlement formed within the forest's eastern edges – the flag that hung above was that of the Empire of Rubicar. This small settlement was never much more than a few watchtowers and tents but it remained in position for quite a period of time.
In the year Eight Hundred and Thirty (830) of the Age of Kingdoms, King Grema Ravenmantle lead the Renastere forces against the Rubicarn forces lead by General Jovi Numerius in the Battle of the Iron-Woods. The battle took several months until the decisive blow that crippled the Rubicarn morale, leading to their defeat and withdraw. This blow was dealt by King Grema as he planted the Renastere Standard in the chest of General Jovi following personal combat. Following the forced withdraw of the Rubicarn forces, a small detail of soldiers and scouts were installed by the King in an effort to keep an eye on the remote area. No permanent settlement was erected but several temporary holdings were established and eventually most of the remaining troops would be sent elsewhere.
It would not be until around Seven Hundred and Ninety-Six (796) of the Age of Shadows when settlers began to gather and defend a small patch of land just outside of the Jarnvid's eastern edge. These settlers established what would later be known as Vaikne. The initial years were the hardest with the gathering of materials, securing food sources, building, and the likes. Thanks to the dangerous creatures and denizens of the Jarnvid such as the Trekriger Clan of Hobgoblins, many died while serving or protecting the village – they included some of the brave souls of the settlers and those of the many others that offered aid and a blade in those dark hours.
Vaikne began its existence as a small hamlet with only a few houses, a farm, and a tiny population of only twenty-five and some oxen. Over the following ten years its population nearly doubled and its reaches expanded, until it had taken control of the lake, later called Lake Vaikne, and was bordering the the secondary settlement of Westshire that was being developed along with Vaikne as a farming community. Soon enough the village and its nearby hamlets began to be used as part of a trade road from between the Thangah'aznn (aka the Halls of Silver) to the north and Valisgrove as well as the rest of the Kingdom of Renastere to the east. Its small port also began to prove useful for similar trade purposes and resting periods. It would be around Eight Hundred and Seven (807) of the Age of Shadows that the Church of Ilîhum would establish a stone based temple-shrine for the locals to worship, replacing the original wooden temple.
In Eight Hundred and Sixty-Two (862) of the Age of Shadows it was officially made a Barony by the Hero-King Iatros Ravenmantle. The small noble House of Manteau was installed to serve as the local Barons, with the original being Jal Manteau and the current being Audace Manteau. The Barony announcement was result of the village of Vaikne having officially absorbed the hamlet of Westshire and its total population exceeding the minimum required for such. The village was nearly completely rebuilt with stone, most of which still stands to the present day, replacing the wooden structures with first of several grants gifted to Vaikne to promote its growth. At least two of the following were used to establish the mine, blacksmith, and begin to arm a small defensive force.
During the years of Eight Hundred and Eighty-Eight (888) and Eight Hundred and Eighty-Nine (889) of the Age of Shadows, pirates under the banner of the Horned Skull ransacked and held prisoner the Barony of Vaikne. Few citizens were harmed during this time but instead were forced into near slave-labor to appease their captors by crafting clothing and preparing travel-ready food for the pirate's eventual withdraw from the area. Baron Lennor Manteau was the only person put to death by the pirates, mostly as a show of force and to put the others in line. His son, Beval, managed to avoid capture as he was away on hunt with his future brother-in-law near Valisgrove. Beval eventually learnt of the siege and his father's death and vowed vengeance. Using his name, promise of coin, and even the promise of battle he raised a small force over the remainder of the year and at snow's melt the following he lead them to free Vaikne. Using the cover of darkness to their advantage the men lead by Beval took the pirates by surprise. They suffered heavy losses as they scrambled back to their ships, leaving their prisoners behind not caring their fate. While their fate is not know, it is believed the pirates were eventually sunk by the Crows' Caw, a privateer group working out of Wycche, by year Nine Hundred (900) of the Age of Shadows. The village suffered from the pirates' abuse and it would take several long years till it was back in working order, with the new baron, Beval to lead them.
Over the year Nine Hundred and Twenty-Six (926) of the Age of Shadows the Orcish Warlord Fangor, Leogan the Liar as he was known to by the Kingdom, lead a great horde from the Winter Tears into the Kingdom. Many locations were attacked nearly at once including the barony of Vaikne in the county of Rhandil. It would had fell if not for the actions of the Dwarven warrior Alzera Crownhammer who single-handedly fought off what was said to be at least two hundred orcs to buy the village time to setup defenses. The village managed to fend off the remaining orcs with few causalities but lost a large amount of crops which lead to a thin harvest resulting in a handful of additional deaths. Alzera's heroic deed was immortalized with a statue, costing many coins, placed near where he held the Orcs back.
The Vestcur Mine incident occurred in Nine Hundred and Forty-Four (944) of the Age of Shadows when miners hit a pocket of poisonous gas. Of the twenty workers over half, eleven, survived, the mine was officially closed and spike-vents were hammered in at spots as specified by a member of the Dwarven clan Oakencrest from Thangah'aznn who was requested to help alleviate the gas problem. Many questions arose as to why the miners were so deep when there was plenty of iron and copper to strip further up, why no test holes were done, why were no yellowbreasts (a small bird) present, and so forth. The investigation never turned up much and eventually the case was closed. A secondary mine, Faulkner’s, was established and provided plenty of the lesser metals but no iron could be found. The need for iron was supplemented by trade with Thangah'aznn and by other parts of the Kingdom.
In the year Nine Hundred and Ninety-Nine (999) of the Age of Shadows there has been numerous occurances that has marked this year as something unusual. Many ill-events have occurred, though so far without serious loss of life. Pirate attacks, earthquakes, tidal waves, dragons, necromancer leading a small army, undead, a stoning curse, and much more. As result a Primus has begun to investigate the area.
